The composite door is by far the best selling door in the UK. But what is a composite door and why is it so good for the home?
A composite door is perfect because it can be designed as either a traditional looking door or one that is highly contemporary. Add to this the choice of colour, glass design options and hardware and you can indeed create an original front door for your home. But there are other advantages as well.
What is a composite door?
Rewind back ten years or so and many people that replaced their old wooded doors did so with a PVCu door. While these provided new designs and a low maintenance alternative, they were a PVCu door glazed with a decorative panel. Early variations of these panels were quite flimsy and while the locking systems were great; there were reports of people being able to simply kick in the door panel that appeared to give way easily.
Other disadvantages included the doors looking very bulky in appearance and older PVCu materials yellowing over time, especially the door panels.
The great thing about composite doors is that the instantly eradicated any perceived issues with either the look or the performance of PVCu doors. Composite doors gave an affordable quality door yet one that was simply much better than a PVCu door and far cheaper than a new timber door.
What is a composite door made of?
A composite door consists of a high-quality PVCu outer frame and a door leaf made out of a durable internal and external skin in the chosen design. This is then bonded onto a core to create the final door leaf. It’s the core that determines the two types of composite doors available. One type consists of a solid timber core, the other consists of a GRP (glass reinforced plastic) that is also used on the hulls of boats and elsewhere in manufacturing.
The composite door skin once bonded under extreme pressure to the GRP or solid timber core is then fitted with the high-security locks, handles and accessories to create the finished door.
Today’s composite doors come in a huge range of colours, textures and designs. They’re made even better by a choice of contemporary or traditional glass, contemporary or period hardware and flexible design options. These include French Doors, double doors, doors with side or top panels and even stable doors.
