What are the best front doors for your home?
As you do your research around new front doors, you will see much choice in front of you. There are front doors in PVCu, in aluminium, made of timber and composite doors to name just a few.
All these different types of products have their advantages, price points and quality levels. Here we summarise the benefits of each type of material:
PVCu front doors.
A PVCu front door is still available but is regarded very much as a previous generation door. PVCu doors consist of a regular door that has an aluminium panel in place of the glass, to create a decorative front door.
The main advantage of PVCu is its low cost, making them ideal for customers only looking for a very reasonably priced product.
The only disadvantage of a PVCu front door is that more recent products such as aluminium and composite doors have surpassed it regarding appearance, how it feels in use and longevity. However, for its low cost, it cannot be beaten.
Aluminium Front Doors.
Aluminium has enjoyed a real resurgence in popularity over the last 15 years. Gone is the perception that aluminium is cold, prone to condensation, only used in factories and needs a hardwood subframe.
Aluminium front doors are now hugely popular amongst homeowners for their fantastic visual appearance, the vast range of colours and the many different types of designs available. An aluminium door features very slim and sturdy frames, several types of threshold options and can be chosen with traditional or highly contemporary door handles.
The other significant advantage of an aluminium door is that it can frequently be made wider and taller than PVCu or composite doors. For those looking for large, slim doors that are rich in colour and will last for many years, we recommend aluminium.
You will typically find aluminium more expensive than PVCu but cheaper than timber doors.
Timber doors.
Nothing beats the look, quality and desirability of a solid wood front door. Some of the doors in our period buildings are over 150 years old and still functioning to this day. Timber doors will last for a great number of years, but they can only do so if you correctly maintain them.
Today’s modern wood doors come with extended guarantees and are of fantastic quality thanks to modern paints, technology and the latest manufacturing methods. They also come in a huge choice of colours too. However, you will need to take care of your solid wood front door, ensuring any damaged or chipped paint is promptly repaired to prevent any deterioration of the product.
You can expect timber and solid wood front doors to be at the upper edge of the price range, but the quality and longevity are what you pay for. They are a beautiful warm and natural material.
Composite Front Doors.
If you have not heard of a composite front door before, it is one the best selling type of front door in the UK. Composite doors are priced well, come in a huge choice of colours, styles and designs and also offer a long service life.
A composite door has an internal core of either solid engineered timber or a high-density foam. The inner and outer skins of a composite door are a Glass Reinforced Polymer (GRP), is glued and applied with pressure to the inside core.
The finished product is a highly insulated solid-feel door that can give the appearance of a wood door. Composite doors require little maintenance other than a routine clean, being virtually maintenance free. You will get many years of trouble-free use with a modern composite door. Front door security and performance.
Every type of door will extol its virtues and advantages. This can sometimes be confusing for a customer trying to decide which door is the best.
In our experience, there is no ‘best’ product. Thankfully standards and regulations on building products exist today meaning that all new doors should conform to minimum standards for quality, security, or weather performance.
The quality aspect of a door can in the first instance be reflected in its price point. The higher quality door will be more expensive because of how it is designed and manufactured. The hardware may be of a much higher quality, and the specification of the door may exceed the minimum standards of quality in place.
All our products are quality products at different specifications and price points. However, all provide your home with important security, reliability, energy efficiency and longevity.
