Crittall Style Front Door in Kent

This Crittall-style front door in Kent was designed for a Faversham home with an existing arched opening. Newlite supplied and fitted a black aluminium heritage door set with slim glazing bars, matching side panels and a glazed arch detail above the doors.

The brief was to create the appearance of traditional steel doors while using a modern aluminium alternative with everyday security, weather performance and lower maintenance. It is a good example of how steel-look aluminium doors can suit period homes where standard modern patio doors would look too plain.

Aluminium Crittall-style front door in Kent

The doors were specified as a double door set with smaller glazed side panels and a black matt finish. The slim aluminium profiles and applied glazing bars create the gridded appearance associated with old steel doors, while the insulated frames and modern glass improve comfort and usability.

We use Crittall-style here as a descriptive term. These are not genuine Crittall steel doors. They are aluminium alternatives designed to give a similar heritage, industrial and Art Deco appearance for homeowners who want the look in a practical modern product.

Why aluminium was chosen instead of steel

For this Kent home, aluminium gave the right balance of appearance, performance and value. The frames are powder coated for durability, the glass is modern safety glass, and the door set uses secure locking suitable for external use.

  • Black matt powder-coated aluminium frames.
  • Slim glazing bars applied to the glass for a steel-inspired grid pattern.
  • Modern double glazing with safety glass.
  • Secure locking and externally glazed security details.
  • Matching side panels and a glazed arch panel above the doors.

Heritage and Art Deco styling details

The surrounding frame, door sash profiles and glazing bar layout were chosen to keep the sightlines balanced. The black finish works well with the property and gives the door set the familiar period metal-window character many homeowners associate with Art Deco and industrial glazing.

The arched head above the doors was completed with a separate glazed panel. Aluminium opening doors cannot be curved in the same way as some steel or timber designs, so the fixed panel closes the shape neatly while keeping the same colour and style.
